Why Plato and Euthyphro are have discussion

Socrates → First Student

  • Philosophy: Greece Language.

Philo: love

Sophia: wisdom → out smart.

  • Why Plato and Euthyphro are have discussion

Euthyphro → prosecute of his father because he killed his mother by un intentional.

Socrates → follow Euthyphro.

What is the goal?

To find a definition of the holy.

Why Plato and Euthyphro are have discussion

  • Two Criteria for the Definition:

1 – Criteria #1: The holy must have the form of the Holy.

What is a form?

A form is an expression of a thing’s essence.

The essence a thing is its definition characteristic.

It is what makes a thing that thing.

The first criterion means that the definition must capture all that is holy.

2- Criterion #2: the Holy must have only the form of the holy and none the opposite quality.

The second criterion means that the definition must capture only what is holy.

Euthyphro first definition of holy: prosecuting the wrongdoer, regardless of identity.

Euthyphro’s justification: this is what gods do.

Socrates Objection: this an example of a holy act, not holiness itself, this definition violates the first criterion.

Second Definition: what is pleasing to gods is holy and what is displeasing to gods is unholy.

Socrates Askes: Do the gods ever disagree?  Yes

Imagine on object X: suppose one of the gods finds X pleasing. So, by definition #2, X is →holy. Now, since the gods can disagree, another god can find X displeasing. So, by definition #2 X is →unholy. This means that the some object can be both holy an unholy. This is violates Criterion #2.

Third definition: what all the gods find pleasing is holy.

Socrates Objection: What is pleasing to the gods is different than what is holy.

How do we demonstrate this?

  1. Determine what makes something holy.
  2. Determine what makes something pleasing to the gods.
  3. Compare and show they are different.

Why Plato and Euthyphro are have discussion

Basic Concepts:

  1. Cause precedes effect.
  2. The cause is distinct from the effect.( They are two different things)
  3. An object X is X because it has the form of X. IE an object is holy because it has the form of being holy.
  4. Two things with different forms are different things.

Socrates Ask:  1- Do the god love something because it is holy or is something holy because the gods love it?

First option: something is holy first and then the gods love it.

. Being holy is the cause of the gods loving something.

. Something is holy because it is has the form of holy.

. The form of being holy is not the love of gods.

2- Why is something pleasing to the gods?

. Just because the gods love it. So, the form of being pleasing to the gods is the love of the gods.

.Two things with different forms are different things. So, what is holy is different than what is pleasing to the gods.

Fourth Definition: All that is holy is just.

Socrates Ask: Does this mean that all that is just is holy?

No, holiness is a part of justice.

What part of justice is holy?

Serving to the gods is holy and service to mankind is the rest.

Why Plato and Euthyphro are have discussion

What is service?

Service normally means care designed to improve.

Can we improve the gods?

No

.Euthyphro says that service to the gods is a sort of commerce.

We give praise and worship to gods in exchange for fours.

In commerce, both parties are supposed to benefit. But, it doesn’t appear that the gods benefit. But, Euthyphro says, the gods are pleased by our praise and worship. So, what is pleasing to the gods is holy. But, we have already shown that this definition doesn’t work.
