What is Positive psychology

Positive psychology refers to the study of happiness and what matters most in life. It revolves around understanding how to channel one’s strength on positive thinking and looking at the positive things in life rather than dwelling on negativity. PARMA Theory is made up of five components, (Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Achievement) that explain what makes up a good life. My character strengths and virtues are honesty, love, kindness, teamwork, and hope. These Character Strengths are what define who I am. I have acquired them from those close to me and some like love and kindness were instilled in me right from a young age. These Character Strengths can help me buffer, manage, and overcome problems in that I can be able to seek assistance from others when I know the problem is too big for me to handle. Because of my kindness, others that I have helped can also chip in to help even without asking. I always love others and even in adversity love always win. Even when faced with problems I always have hope that things will get better soon. Because of knowing that people will stand me, I do not think too much on my problems and this helps me to have positive thoughts. Thinking positively has the effect of making one lead a health life and maintain a good overall well-being. For example, there was a time was stuck with homework but I asked for help from my friends. There was a period I did not have money nor a part-time job but I kept faith that things would soon be better and within the same month, I landed a job. As a leader, these Character Strengths help me to love and be a motivation to my followers. Through my kindness and always having hope my followers are kept motivated and willing to help one another. As a follower, they can help be my best self since I will always be willing to work closely with other followers and I will not hesitate to ask for or offer help to others.

  1. Values-based leadership refers to a guiding or leading people according to one’s core set of values, principles, and purpose. These values are aligned with organization’s values. Organizations can use these set of values and principles as a source of internal motivation for the employees. This type of leadership shows compassion for others in an organization. Values-based leadership is related to the shifting paradigm of leadership in that it involves empowering employees to achieve the organization’s goals and not dictating to them what to do. It also encourages use of shared values or norms of an organization when assessing the performance of employees. Moreover, it also promotes collaboration at work place a shift from competitor attitude. To lead with value means to have certain shared core principles that help one in guiding others. When one leads with value, he or she is more confident about the decisions they make since they know the followers have same value. It also means one building a friendly relationship with followers increasing their motivation level and productivity. The key qualities of values-based leaders are humility, self-reflection, self-confidence, and balancing perspective. Acting like a moral leader demands one to distinguish between right and wrong and choosing to follow the right. One has to choose what is good, honest, and just in leadership. The two qualities that I have relating to values-based leadership are respect and confidence in what I do. I respect other people and always listen to what they say. When I decide to undertake a task I believe I my abilities to achieve it.What is Positive psychology
  2. My first CliftonStrengths Assessment theme is empathy. I am able to put myself in another person’s shoes and read their emotions. I am able to feel what they are feeling by correctly evaluating their emotions. I can reason with them even when at times I do not agree with them. For instance, when someone losses a loved one and they miss class because of stress I can understand their pain. Another theme is positivity. I am able to see the positive in other people and I am quick to praise others and I always optimistic in situations. The theory behind CliftonStrengths assessment is Positive Psychology theory. This theory looks at what makes life meaningful to live. It focuses on the positive aspects of life such as positive emotions and positive institutions. It looks at the strengths of a person and not weakness and thus generates positive energy from those who follow it. I have learnt that I am a person who looks at the positive side of life and things. I do not get discouraged or give up easily and keeping a positive attitude has been helpful in my life. This assessment is different from Emotional Intelligence in that emotional intelligence looks at the way one reads their emotions, other people emotions and how they interact with other people. It tells if one is able to read emotions correctly and act accordingly. It is similar to IT because both help one to cope with numerous challenges in life. This demonstrates that these tests are important in making one understand himself or herself better. They also make one to relate well with others, which helps collaboration. Even though these tests might be different, they all help one to become a better person and to face problems with positivity. These two assessments have made me to be more alert about other people and how they feel. Knowing the state of emotion that a person is in will help me to choose the right words when talking to them. Through understanding myself and other people, it will be easy to strike a meaningful conversation with others.

A leader is someone who creates a conducive environment and inspires others to flourish while a follower is someone who is attracted to the vision and objectives of a leader and works towards helping achievement of these objectives. Effective followership is ability to take responsibility, serve others, and contribute in the process of transformation. Thus, it involves in helping the leader lead in a better way and nurturing a good relationship with the leader. Five styles of followership defined in Kelley’s Model of Followership are passive, alienated, conformist, pragmatic, and effective followership. Alienated follower is one who is independent and critical thinker. However, they are passive and it distances them from the leader and other team members. As such, the alienated follower rarely uses his or her strength to help the leader and his or her team members. This also makes communication difficult and hinders progress in an organization. To improve this kind of followership, a leader should be more open to the follower. He or she should make the follower feel that they and their opinion matters. He can organize social events that can enhance the bond between the follower, the leader, and other team members. This can be team building activities through which the members know each other better. I feel that I belong to the effective followership category. I always participate whenever in am in organization or in a group of people. I differ when I feel something could have been done differently and I am willing to be corrected if I am wrong. I do enjoy helping others and challenging myself to do better in all the task I involve myself. I think I can be asking more questions in order to be a more effective follower.
