Use of Robots in War
Autonomous robots will play an important role in war. They will make accessing remote areas easier and they will be able to carry more weaponry. Deploying the autonomous robots in battle will save human lives, both the soldiers as well as civilian deaths. Autonomous robots will be more effective in rough terrain and places that soldiers cannot reach on foot. In future, the art of war will take a different shape and it will be the robots that will be fighting. What people watch in fiction movies will unravel to them as a reality.
Introduction Use of Robots in War
Since the time of Roman gladiators, people have always come with new ways of fighting. The weapons of war have kept on changing from one year to another. Today countries are busy working on new technology and trying their best to edge those they consider their enemies. Since war is unpredictable and can start any time, it is always important to be prepared in terms of both personnel and technology. The animosity between countries such as Russia and US or China keeps on rising a clear sign that not all is well. Today countries are in arms race and spying on one another. Today countries are not only making weapons but also trying to make robots that will replace the soldiers. This might sound like a movie but it will not take long for robots to replace soldiers in the battle field. Some countries are already experimenting with robot soldiers and as technology keeps on evolving, robot soldiers will soon be a thing of the past. Today, robots are working alongside troops in Afghanistan and Iraq and they are proving useful . However, these are semi-autonomous robots and require human control. The Australian beaches are nowadays manned by Little Ripper, which are to spot sharks and alert the relevant authorities. They are equipped with technology that can differentiate human beings and other creatures from sharks. They have been effective in reduce the number of Shark causalities. The direction that most countries want to take is that of autonomous robots which can decide to shoot or destroy a target or enemy on their own. This essay looks how robot soldiers can be deployed in war and their advantages over human soldiers.
Body-use of Robots in War
To begin with, robots are all terrain enabled. This will be a game changer since robots will be able to access the remotest areas. Today, human soldiers are limited by terrain. The movement of human soldiers depends on terrain and in mountainous areas; they take long to cover a small area. With robots, this will not be a huge task as they will be powered and moving up mountains with ease. Fighting militia will be much easier since in countries like Afghanistan terrorist groups like hiding and attacking from the mountains. Therefore, the robots will take the war right at the doorstep of the enemies (Etzioni & Etzioni, 2017). Autonomous robots will be able to know the easiest route to take just like human beings. They will not be prevented by rocks or other obstacles from reaching their target.
Another advantage of autonomous robots is that they will be able to carry out the same tasks as human beings without risking the life of a single soldier. Some robots like SWORDS need control of human being in close proximity. This puts the lives of those controlling them in danger because of being close or around the danger zone (Singer, 2009). This risk will be avoided by deploying the autonomous robots. In places like Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Northern Nigeria where terrorist groups put up their bases, these robots can be able to help deal with such extremist groups.
Moreover, deploying autonomous robots will result in a decrease in the number of civilian deaths (Roberts, 2019). Whenever there is war or fighting going on, civilians die and this is a cause of concern for many. Human beings are not precise in their targets and there have been numerous cases of strikes hitting schools and hospitals. The probability of such events happening can be reduced by use of autonomous robots. These robots are going to be more accurate and precise in locating and targeting the enemy. In a more recent case, the fighting going on in Syria has been accompanied by a large number of civilian deaths and injuries. Due to human error, government strikes as well as those by opposition troops have made a huge impact on civilians. Military robots are will also be able to withstand damage that can kill human beings. The robots will be made from strong materials which can withstand bombs and grenades which otherwise will automatically kill a human soldier. For example, in Afghanistan, many soldiers are killed by booby traps and other explosives (“Three ways robots can save lives in war”, 2019). Autonomous robots will be able to detect such dangers and neutralize them before they cause any damage. Therefore, having autonomous soldiers will not only reduce the number of soldiers who die in the battle field but also make the soldiers available whenever the need arises. The military robots will fight for longer before they are destroyed by the enemy. Some damages could be repaired and the robot deployed back to fight in the war. When soldiers are injured in war, they retire after recovering. The injury they face are life threatening and once healed they are no longer fit to go back to the battlefield. Unlike human being, military robots will not need to be retired after they have repaired for the damage caused. Thus, in the long-term the military robots will reduce the number of soldiers who die in the course of duty.
Additionally, military robots can carry more weapons compared to human beings (Stanford.edu, 2019). These robots are able to carry machine guns as well as other heavy artilleries even through rough terrain. This is an impossible task for human beings since they are limited by their physical strength. Considering the terrain in most war zones, this further reduces the amount of weapons that a soldier can carry on his or her feet. Therefore, introduction of autonomous robots will go a long way in increasing the amount of ammunition available in the battle field. The war will be extended and the enemy with inferior technology can be neutralized easily.
Finally, once an autonomous robot is made, the operational costs will be low. One of such robots will be serving and operating in an area that requires several soldiers. The only large costs that will be incurred will be repair costs, which cannot be compared to the cost of treating injured soldiers or the cost of a lost life. The autonomous robots will help cut military budgets once they are deployed. The money saved can be used by other departments of the government or in research and development. Overall, the only high costs will be incurred in the initial stage of developing the robots. Once they are manufactured and start performing tasks as needed then the total costs will come down. The same technology used to make these robots could also be deployed in other areas of life and be useful such as manning important buildings (Szakacsi, 2016).
Conclusion-use of Robots in War
In conclusion, it is high time for introduction of autonomous robots. The advancement in technology is supposed to also help soldiers and reduce the number of soldiers that perish in war zone. Human life is precocious and once lost it cannot be recovered. When a soldier or a civilian dies in war, they cannot be replaced and they will be missed forever. Autonomous robots are going to reduce this burden and families who send their loved one to battle field will be happy to see them come back and rejoin them. Even though many nations might oppose such a move, countries are trying their best to develop these autonomous robots. They are the future soldiers. They will not shade blood, majority of damage done can be repaired and the robots send back to the battle field. This is not possible with humans since an injured soldier becomes a liability in the battle. Even when they are treated, they cannot no longer join their colleagues in the frontline of the battle field.
