The Origin and History of Life on Earth

Scientists have discovered many new ideas and interrelationships in the last 500 years within both biological organisms and our vast universe.  The most recent years have seen an explosion in the amount of knowledge in both realms due to technological advances that allow us to delve deeper and farther than ever before.  However, our textbook states “even from a modern scientific perspective, we are still asking some of the same basic questions.  How did life originate?  And how and why do living things change?”

(Integrated Science, Tillery, et. al., 6th Ed., p 497)

Our textbook presents a couple of the most widely accepted scientific theories about the origin and evolution of life on earth.  However, the purpose of this assignment is to expose you to more of the theories surrounding the origin of life.  It is important to understand the different views in our world, even if you personally fully support one specific idea or theory.

The Origin and History of Life on Earth

Part I:  Theories on the Origin of Life

There are at least three types of theories which attempt to explain the origin of life on Earth.

Type 1: The first suggest that life was created by a Supreme Being or spiritual force.

Type 2:  The second set of hypotheses suggest that life began in another part of the universe and arrived on Earth by chance, such as with the crash of a comet or meteor.

Type 3: The third outline that life began billions of years ago as the result of a complex sequence of reactions that took place spontaneously on Earth.

The link below is a website that summarizes several different theories on the origin of life on earth.
