Criticisms of feminism in the postcolonial period entail how women are portrayed in colonial and postcolonial literature, as well as, the assumptions and challenges made regarding women in both society and literature. In this regard, postcolonial feminists describe ways through which women continue to be marginalized and stereotyped, ironically sometimes by authors in the postcolonial period. Before the 1990s, the majority of Hispanic, Black and Asian criticism, theory and creative writing were overlooked by scholars and academic institutions in the West. Nonetheless, more recently, there have been developments in feminist literature, with some of the best authors being Chandra Mohanty, Gayatri Spivak, Gloria Anzaldúa and Trinh T. Minh-ha among others.
However, the critics reject the earlier approaches implemented by feminists that were based on the assumption that women share a common identity due to their shared experience of oppression. They also reject and shun the assumption that white middle class women should be contemplated as the norm when it comes to feminism since the concerns of these women do not necessarily represent the concerns of all women. Moreover, the discordances in the social statuses of women result in extremely distinct responses and problem even in terms of broad issues. The aim of the postcolonial representation of novel feminism was to not only represent women as visible but also intelligent and productive members of the western society. Nonetheless, the term postcolonial women turned out to be problematic due to the different issues and concerns raised by women of distinct races and social statuses. For certain theorists the term resulted in the oversimplification and lack of adequate reckoning and consideration of the arguments and issues of the oppressed. Other theorists were of the opinion that the “sexist” and “racist” terminology are more or less similar if not interchangeable; a notion that led to confusion between the portrayal of postcolonial women in terms of feminisms, as well as, the representation of the native in terms of colonialism.
It is imperative to note that modern feminists are altering the ideologies that have belittled the status of women. However, in as much as there has been progress over the years in terms of feminism, many women of minority races still face discrimination and negative stereotypes. It is because of such incidences that there has been rampant criticism of feminists as advancing the agenda of feminism from the point of view of the concerns and issues of white women that tend to be different from those of many women from other races. For instance, despite significant improvements in education, Saudi women are known to still live under restrictive practice. Moreover, albeit Saudi women are an integral part of the society, both in and out of their homes, they are usually limited in their communications due the prevailing restrictions against dialogues between non-related women and men by Islamic law. More opportunities are available for women in the current world. Moreover, feminist movements such as the #MeToo movement are fighting for the equal and respectful treatment of women devoid of objectification or carnal requirements to get jobs or promotions. However, despite the fact that women have achieved significant milestones in getting more education and employment opportunities, there is a concern that the feminism movements often portray the needs of white women while shunning the needs and plights of women from other races. Thus, while women are making progress in fighting for their prerogatives, a certain portion of the women (white women appear to be enjoying the benefits of these movements more than others (women of other races) even in educational settings.

The contemporary image and criticism of postcolonial feminism do not simply portray the efforts and works of women from the developing world, but offers or provides different approaches that are drawn from numerous disciplines. This portrayal also challenges Western academic institutions for turning a blind to ethnic-related literature, particularly those from minority races and ethnicities. Culture is extremely influential in postcolonial literature and education. Education has become a global affair whereby international students from different countries cam pursue education in other nations. Based on this understanding, culture is an aspect of education that should not be shunned due to its prominence in improving education and sharing of different perspectives on life and academic topics.Race and Gender
Humans share various universal attributes. For instance, every person shares specific understandings and desires irrespective of their ethnicity and culture. Moreover, every person seeks validation and share in the joy and sorrow of others from time to time. Despite the existence of different ethnicities and cultures, every person has a unique talent, fears and aspirations. Nonetheless, despite the ubiquitous traits shared by these individuals, each person is an individual and people vary significantly in their attributes and capabilities due to their different ethnicities. The various social, cultural, religious and life experiences that people possess and undergo make them unique, more so if the people are from different ethnicities. For instance, the varied ethnic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds of people can reveal some things about them that are unique. When these people go to other English-speaking nations to pursue higher education, they experience certain stereotypical treatment in the host nations on account of their ethnicities.
When it comes to international students with discordant ethnicities in TESOL learning programs, understanding one’s ethnicity is just a single portion of the steps it takes in knowing and understanding these students. This statement means that in as much as a person may share ethnicity with another individual, this does not mean that he or she knows everything about that person and understands his or her very academic and social need. Thus, to a certain extent the stereotypes that affect people from different ethnicities are also perpetuated by their colleagues with the same ethnic backgrounds. However, most cases of prejudice directed to individuals of different ethnic backgrounds usually emanate from people with whom they do not share ethnicities.Race and Gender
In the context of TESOL, understanding the ethnic background of an individual is only a tip of the iceberg when coming up with suitable teaching strategies for helping these students grasp English concepts. It is important to note that cultures is a single illuminating factor that helps TESOL instructors in understanding their students from different ethnic backgrounds. However, ethnicity only influences but not dictates the aspects of the students’ lives. In this regard, a person’s ethnic background can affect how he or she interacts with other people and how they conceptualize the world around them. However, this does not mean that the TESOL instructors should adopt a teaching method or approach that focuses on the culture of the student in an attempt to help them grasp English concepts faster.
Ethnicity is an extremely vital part of a person since it often impacts their beliefs, communication styles and lifestyles. The general assumption is that a person’s ethnic background also affects his or her ability to learn English as a second language. While this assumption to true to a certain extent, it can be misleading for TESOL instructors who decide to adopt a teaching method that focuses solely on the ethnic backgrounds of the students to help them learn how to read, write and speak in English better. Ethnicity is only a single aspect of the personality of an individual in such a globalized world. As such, students with ethnic backgrounds that are different from those of the host nation should not be subjected to unnecessary prejudice and stereotypes based on their ethnicities since the world is currently more globalized with people from one ethnicity adopting the cultures of other ethnicities.Race and Gender
