Description

Both poems “Not Waving but Drowning” by Stevie Smith and “Zimmer in Grade School” by Paul Zimmer depict the silent struggles of two individuals. In my opinion, the poem “Not Waving but Drowning” is the culmination of the life of the persona in the poem “Zimmer in Grade School”. In the second poem, the persona experiences difficult times in school evident in his struggle with school work and participation in fights. As a young person, the persona is aware of his struggles but decides to alienate them and cocoon his misgivings inside. However, in the first poem, the persona makes a point of seeking help, but people mistake his “drowning” for waving. It appears that when the persona finally decides to signal for help at the final hour, it is too late.

This message in these poems depicts the lives of the unfortunate in the society, the slow learners, the outcasts and the ones seen as disappointments. Such people usually end up committing suicide or dying in depression because of all the struggles they harbor inside that are disguised from the public. Often, when people begin to notice, it is too late as the damage has already been done. But the silver lining is that such cases can be mitigated when the person is still at a tender age or the problem solved in the early stages before time runs out. Both poems “Not Waving but Drowning” by Stevie Smith and “Zimmer in Grade School” by Paul Zimmer depict the silent struggles of two individuals.
