HOW WE CAN USE CCSS TO ACHIEVE SOCIAL STUDIES GOALS

Social studies as a discipline are very significant in the lives of the people around the entire world. It is because the subject’s primary objective is to ensure that the learners are equipped with civic education (Herczog, 2010). Besides, social studies enrich the students with an understanding of their historical backgrounds. These goals are imperative because they form a platform that leads to good citizenship that is coupled with civic responsibility. The majority of the nations around the world have come up with several ways to promote the teaching and learning of social studies. For instance, many of these countries have encouraged the teachers to emphasize on the skills that promote the understanding of the discipline through an adoption of standards (Krey, 1994). These procedures are aimed at altering the curriculum of the training to ensure that the students are taught with a purpose. For example, the CCSS standards give instructors a guideline of how to teach the social studies. The introduction of the standards was aimed at addressing the common challenges that have been facing the teaching of the subject. For instance, less instruction time was allocated to social studies than to other competitive disciplines because of the notion that social studies are not required in the jobs market. This paper focuses on how we can apply CCSS standards to achieve the goals of social studies.

To begin with, the CCSS standards are aimed at supporting different countries around the world in the preparation of the youths for the participation in the field of career, college and civic lives (Krey, 1994). To that end, the standards can be applied in achieving the goals of social studies through adhering to the inquiry arc which is vital in coming up with the ideas that determine the content that the students should learn in social studies. The approach advocates for the application of the techniques that are essential in offering support to the students in the carrying out of the analysis and explanations of the challenges that are facing the social world.  For instance, the standards give the various states a list of guidelines that should be followed in the upgrading of social studies with the objective of ensuring that the knowledge that has been gathered from other subjects such as Geography, Economics, History, and Civics is used in the development of conclusions and therefore form a platform that would lead to informed decisions.

Besides, the CCSS standards can be used to meet the goals of Social studies through offering an avenue that can be utilized by all the education stakeholders to determine the curricular content of social studies (Herczog, 2010). Thus, if the content is relevant, then, the goals of social studies will be met. It is because the learners will be equipped with several skills that are necessary for the workplaces. For instance, through a well-defined social studies curriculum, the students will develop collaborative, problem-solving and critical skills that are important in the post-secondary futures of the readers which will lead them into actively participating in the civic life.

Equally, the CCSS standards can be used by one to achieve the goals of Social studies through encouraging the learners to engage in behaviors and practices that incorporate the arts of civic life(Herczog, 2010). For example, this can be accomplished through advising the students to work individually or as a group of citizens in tackling of an issue in the classroom. This is vital because it will enable the learners to gain experience and knowledge that are fundamental in promoting good citizenship. It is important, especially for K-12 curriculum.

Similarly, we can use the CCSS standards to meet the goals of Social studies through discouraging the teachers from concentrating on the content mode of teaching social studies (Adler et al., 2017). It is because the discipline should be taught with an objective of ensuring
