Has sitting ever caused you pain or discomfort

Has sitting ever caused you pain or discomfort?

Do you fidget when you sit?

Most likely, you answered yes to these questions as I did. Turns out our bodies are not designed to sit for extended periods-but we do. We sit at work, in the car, playing video games, interacting with social media, and watching TV. We sit on couches and chairs, on stools and benches as well as therapy balls and cushions.

Some people may be familiar with the phrase “Sitting is the new smoking” which has been credited to Dr. James Levine. He goes further to state, “Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death.”

According to the American Physical Therapy Association, more than half of workers who spend their day sitting experience low back pain. In other words, sitting for long periods will most likely cause the back and abdominal muscles to weaken to the point where they are unable to provide support which can lead to pain.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the majority of acute low back pain is mechanical in nature, meaning there is an issue with the way the spine, muscle, intervertebral discs and nerves fit and move together.Has sitting ever caused you pain or discomfort

To counteract these negative effects, we should strengthen core muscle groups that support the low back, improve mobility and flexibility, and promote proper positioning and posture.

So what are we to do? Many options are available; however, none of them worked for me in my current situation. I did not have space for a therapy ball or the desire to spend lots of money on a chair I could not easily test-drive. My solution was to modify available seating surfaces.  The Core Motion Deck was designed to facilitate positive fidgeting, deter stillness, and encourage dynamic movement in a variety of settings. Sitting is believing!!

Frequent Concerns and questions

Using the motion deck makes me sit higher-why can’t I adjust the height?

This question has come up a lot! The answer has several components-First, by increasing your sitting height your body benefits from a wider base of support and opens your hips while engaging the muscles in your legs and core. Feels weird to begin with but most people become adjusted to the stance and eventually enjoy it. Second-incorporating height adjustment would have altered the simple and easy design, increasing not only price but requiring constant adjustment. The goal was a product that was easy to use, easy to move, physically and mentally beneficial while being fun and cost effective.

When I use the motion deck for too long it begins to hurt.

Anytime your body sends you signals of pain or discomfort you should listen. This is probably your body’s way of letting you know that it is time to change positions. The Core Motion Deck was not designed to take the place of seating and be used for hours on end. It was designed to offer an alternative to sitting still. Optimal movement during the day should cycle through a wide variety of movement including but not limited to the Core Motion Deck.Has sitting ever caused you pain or discomfort
