Railroads have come a long way from the days of rail carts drawn by horses, to steam engines to diesel engines to the current diesel electric run freight cars of today’s modern world. Railroads have had to be upgraded over time and the changing engine designs as well which have cost a pretty penny but all is worth it, given the job security it has provided and  good revenue returns. Union Pacific as an example, generated close to 20 billion U.S. dollars in revenue in 2016 alone (Leading North American railroads in 2016, 2018) to Association of American railroads, today’s freight railroad employees are highly skilled professionals who are among the highest paid workers in the nation, Careers”, 2018) .Freight railroads are the easiest solution for any commodity that needs to be transported long distance. The future is definitely bright for railroad employees, investors, the dependents like American citizens and the government, everyone is at an advantage.

Union Pacific Yard is the biggest in the world, so big that it has to be computer monitored and it handles practically everything that America consumes. The computerization is a modern part of railroad that reduces congestion significantly and makes it safer. It is in this yard that containers are given to the train assigned to its home area. The sorting and assigning is supposed to make cargo go in the right direction. The yard carries out a variety of activity and can handle up to 10,000 freight cars in a day. In the yard, the freight cars are sorted and by use of a computer, rails are switched automatically so that each freight car goes to its assigned train. Crews on the other side put the freight cars back together. For trains that have the same cargo, they are only checked for mechanical emergencies, refueled and released on their way. Each train and rail car is serviced before leaving the yard. It’s amazing that a country that handles 1.3 million freight cars and 600 locomotives did not begin big but has a history behind it and history in any sector is important in identifying the .milestones achieved overtime.

The rail roads started becoming popular when people in the past realized that they could move goods faster with steel rails and wheels. Then came the horse drawn carriages that utilized the rails and moved goods faster. Then came the steam engines and finally fuel ones. The system has expanded enough to build their own locomotives, improve the rails with technology so that in the long run, rails are still the preferred system of moving cargo over long distances.

The system has also moved from manual breaking by breakman to the automatic air break to the current dynamic breaks. The movement has also moved from engineers making the decisions of which rails to use to a dispatcher giving command and choosing for the train which road rail to use. Modern systems have made rail road use safe with control systems like BNSF that are essential to an engineer in monitoring speed of the locomotive, dictating rails of use, taking sensor information, monitoring freight cars left behind for later pick up and all basic movements and activities of a locomotive all from a control room away from the tracks but computerized.

Railroad history comes along way, it is becoming improved daily, and like the past, it is the preferred candidate for cargo transport over road and air.

Freight transports basically everything needed in American households, industries making sure that no delays are experienced, and that Americans get all their needs in good time. The rail transport is also a money maker for traders depending on railroads to get their products to the right market. Railroads provide job security and good revenue for the industries and good returns to the government. Railroad transport may be the past in cargo transport but it is the present and still the future for all types of cargo that need to be taken over long distances. With new technology born everyday, the railroad is a positive undertaking because activities in this industry keep getting easier and in the future, it promises road decongestion, bigger cargo load, environmental protection by reducing car idle time on stop signs where rail and road meet and new engines that use less diesel.
