Business administration can be described as all the activities that revolve around managing a business. There exist different theories of management that try to explain the best method that should be used for effective management. This report analyses three articles by different authors and the themes and approaches used by them when writing about management theories. The first article, “Review of Classical Management Theories” gives a general overview of the classic management theories and outlines some of their strengths and weaknesses (Mahmood, Basharat, & Bashir, 2012). The second article, “Modern Management Theories and Practices: A Critical Overview”, analyses the different management theories and investigate how modern managers fit into these theories (Olum, 2004). The third article, “Theories of Management” analyses the work of different theorists. The authors, in discussing the theories of management further give general characteristics of the classical theories of management without critiquing rationale behind each theory. For instance, they state that some of the salient features of classical management theories include; chain of command, division of labour, autocratic leadership (Mahmood, Basharat, & Bashir, 2012). This rather general categorization of classical management theories denies the reader to critique for him or herself the strengths and weaknesses of these theories.

Similarly, Olum, introduces the readers to management theory concepts by defining the purpose, functions and goals of management. He proceeds to investigate the reasons why it is important to study management. In answering this question, he states that study of management is important as it enables managers to understand what they experience and helps them cope with complex relationships such as those that exist in the business environment. He then proceeds to outline some classical management theories and modern management theories (Olum, 2004). He, however, does not analyse the relationship between the classical theories and the modern management theories and how classical theories have influenced the nature of the modern day theories.

The approach taken my Hudson in describing the evolution and relevance of management is laudable. His analysis takes into account the historical, social and economic environment that influenced the formation of these theories. One other fundamental aspect covered in his article that has been overlooked in the other two articles is the issue of women and management. He outlines a number of women theorists such as Jane Mouton, Joan Woodward and Rosemary Stewart among others who have made significant contributions to the development of management theories. Olum on the other hand does not highlight the significance that women have had in contributing to management theories but only writes about the importance of women in the organizational hierarchy. Hudson explains the reason for the poor acknowledgement of women for their contributions is the frameworks for which their competencies were analysed. Women suffer from similar standard of evaluation as men and where they were found to be different, these differences were considered to be weaknesses (Hudson, 2015). This is one of the areas in management theory study that needs to be considered in future research.
