Using your text and class notes, place the following situations within the context of one of the theories of child development. How does the theory explain the behavior cited? Is the theory necessary to explain this behavior? Do we need to know the theory to be more successful parents and educators?

A child is in middle school and is becoming involved in clubs and sports outside of his school work. His parents are very supportive of him being honest and developing interests in activities he likes to be engaged in. He is very interested in robotics and basketball. He is learning how to make and keep friendships of children his age. You notice that he is a very happy child, who is concerned about others feelings, and wants to contribute to his various communities by being a helpful student in the classroom, helpful son, and a good student. How would his parents approach him about responsibility toward life? What theory most likely explain his development and why?

A child who is in middle school and is actively involved in clubs and sports outside of his school work, need a good approach by his parents about generally becoming responsible about life.  According to Erik Erikson theory, this child has to undergo several psychology steps to fully become a responsible person in future. The theory explains that a child ego develops gradually and with time it helps to resolve problems that are brought by social nature.  The theory was based on child establishing sense of trust on other people especially parents. When this child develops sense of belonging to society, this assist and prepares him to face challenges in future. The following are the stages involved,

Trust versus mistrust-this psychosocial stage arises in the first year of child development. During this stage the child is not sure about the world. The parent is supposed to be very careful when resolving issues at this stage since the child gains stability from their primary care provider. When the parent provides consistent, reliable care to their child, there is high possibility of that child developing sense of trust which he/she will exercise to other relationships and become more responsible to face challenges when they come in future. When a child successfully completes this stage he develops a sense of hope. He hopes that whenever challenges present themselves in future there will be higher chances of other people supporting him. When parents fail to gain full trust from their children, then these children develop fear and therefore cannot fully trust people later in life. For instance, when parent become very unreliable, harsh or start being unpredictable to their children, these behaviors turns their children to have low trust to the world. This sense of mistrust will be carried to other type of relationship and results are high level of insecurity to the world around them.

Children at the age of three up to five years are viewed by their parents as being more aggressive and very vigor. These children at most cases they assert themselves. It is a very crucial stage as most children interact with other children at schools. The children initiate activities through playing games, plan unique activities and this helps them to explore their interpersonal skills. The children feel more initiative and develop sense of security in making decisions and leading other children when given an opportunity. If this tendency is victimized by parents either through critising and a lot of controlling, child feels very guilt. It makes the child to feel as if he is nuisance to other children and consequently losing his self-initiative and becomes a follower of others. When the child try to initiate something most parents ty to stop them thinking that they are protecting them, the parents  moves further by punishing the child if he tries to be more initiative. When this child feels guilty he slows down the level of interaction.

At middle age children learn to do their own things, parents and teachers have important role to teach them specific things in life. The child feels need approvals from society when he demonstrates some unique competencies. If this child is restricted by his parents, he develops sense of inferiority and starts doubting his capability and this may hinder him reaching his potential. Parents should encourage their children initiative since children feel more confident and industrious making them more responsible.

Erikson theory shows that a child between age of two years and three starts developing both physically and become more assertive by making choices like choosing type of toys to play with. At this age a child discovers that he has many abilities like walking and playing with others.  These abilities show how the child is developing both sense of independence and autonomy.
