Define Wellness and list its dimensions
Wellness is the state of being in the best quality of one’s self. Most people think that it is the mere process of being free from sickness. However, it goes deeper to our personal choices in terms of the changes and growth that occur in our lives over time. The National Wellness Institute defined wellness as the a conscious, self-directed, and evolving process of achieving full potential (University of California, n.d)
The dimensions of Wellness are;
- Social Wellness
- Spiritual Wellness
- Emotional Wellness
- Environmental Wellness
- Physical Wellness
- Occupational Wellness
- Intellectual Wellness
- Financial Wellness
- Determine the leading and secondary causes of death in the United States.
As per CDC’s data for 2015, the leading cause of death in the United States is Heart Diseases (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). The Secondary causes include, Cancer, Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases, Accidents, Stroke, Alzheimer’s Disease, Diabetes, Influenza and Pneumonia, Nephritis, and Suicide (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). 3) Identify the underlying causes of death attributable to leading risk factors in the USA.
The underlying cause of death in people with heart diseases are actions such as poor health services, poor diet, genetics, obesity, and physical inactivity (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017).
4) Define Sedentary Death Syndrome
It is a health issue that arises due to prolonged physical inactivity (Siddiqui, 2018). It may be fatal.
5) Determine USA Life Expectancy
From the World Bank’s study in 2015, the USA’s life expectancy is at 78.74 years
6) Compare the “Life Expectancy” of individuals in the USA to “Life Expectancy” of individuals in Japan
The Life Expectancy for the Japanese is at 83.7 years whereas for Americans is at 78.74.
7) Determine why life expectance will decrease in the next 10 years
Life expectancy is set to decrease in the next 10 years because of reasons such as our poor eating habits, our inactivity, lack of proper access to medical care since it is constantly being expensive, rise in the number of accidents, and the gradual increase in the number of suicides due to factors such as stress. Therefore, these are risk factors which negatively affect our life expectancy (Mondal & Shitan, 2013).
8) Define “Physical Activity” and “Exercise”.
World Health Organization defines Physical activity as any bodily movement by the skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure, for example walking. On the contrary, exercise is the planned physical activity that is structured, repetitive, and purposeful (Central District Health Department, n.d).Define Wellness and list its dimensions
9. List the ACSM/AHA Physical Activity and Public Health Recommendations
Aerobic Activity- For all adults from the age of 18-65, and they should engage in it for a minimum of 30 minutes, 5 days a week
Muscle-Strengthening Activity- The Adults should engage in it for a minimum of two days a week. They should do 8-10 exercises for two or more nonconsecutive days using the different muscle groups. They include, weight-training program, weight bearing calisthenics, and Stair climbing (Haskell, Powell, Franklin, & Heath, 2007)
10) Define physical fitness and list the health-related components.
Physical Fitness is the ability to carry out duties without the undue fatigue. It helps one in disease prevention and proper functional health (Ricketts, 2017). Its health-related component includes:
- Cardiovascular Endurance
- Muscular Strength
- Muscular Endurance
- Body Composition

11) State the difference between health fitness standards and physical fitness standards.
Health Fitness Standards is the recommended movement that will enable an individual to reduce the risk of them being at a health risk and further the ability to perform certain physical functions. On the other hand, health fitness standards are the required manner in which our bodies should function in order for us to carry out the physical activities (Dotson, 2013).
12) Describe the health benefits of a comprehensive wellness program.
They include (Wilson, n.d):
- The Cardiovascular System is improved and strengthened
- Ensures that an individual’s muscles are maintained, strengthened, and further improves endurance.
- The muscles become more flexible.
- Ensures that one has more athletic abilities.
- An individual can maintain their desired weight
- One can preserve their lean body tissue.
- Ensures that the resting metabolic rate increases
- Helps to burn fats since the body can be able to use fats during the physical activities
- Improves an individual’s posture and physical appearance
- Betters one’s immunity systems
- Helps in the prevention of chronic diseases such as heart diseases, cancer, and obesity
- It helps in Decreasing the mortality rate from chronic diseases
- Helps in thinning of the blood hence preventing clotting. Consequently, it reduces the probability of one suffering from diseases such as coronary heart disease and stroke.
- Ensures that an individual’s cholesterol levels are maintained at the required and desired levels
- Helps in keeping the blood pressure in check hence it is advantageous to individuals who are suffering from High blood pressure and hypertension
- Helps in the prevention and controlling diabetes
- Decreases the risk for osteoporosis by helping them to achieve peak bone mass in young adults and maintain bone mass later in life.
- Ensures that one can sleep easily
- Helps in the prevention of chronic back pain
- Relieves tension thereby one finds it easier to cope with life stresses
- Raises the energy levels and improves and individual’s productivity at work.
- Decelerates the aging process and extends the longevity of one’s life.
- Promoted psychological well-being; better morale, self-image, and self esteem
- Helps one to deal with problems such as depression and anxiety
- Encourages positive lifestyle changes (improving nutrition, quitting smoking, controlling alcohol and drug use)
- Reduces the resting time that one needs in between carrying out physical activities.
- Expedites the recovery process when one is sick
- Regulates and improves the manner in which our body functions.
- Improves physical stamina and prevents chronic fatigue
- Helps deal with the dependency as it helps to maintain independent living.
