Instructional technology refers to a branch of education that is concerned with designing and developing a learning system and providing and equipping it with a feedback mechanism to with the aim of creating learning experiences that are engaging and effective. Instructional technology, therefore, refers to a specific know-how employed in the creation of learning resources.
One of the major trends in the field of instructional technology has been an increase in the use of web-based tools to create and disburse knowledge. Additionally, these resources are increasingly used to collaborate and support learning through the broadcasting of personal information through several channels including YouTube and blogs. Instructional designers have also been integrating such tools in the classroom as their accessibility increases especially among students and teachers. Mobile devices have been a major trend in the application of technologies. Today, technological tools such as mobile devices and the Cloud are being used extensively. Give a definition of instructional design as presented in the literature as well as the definition of instructional design as you see it. The available literature defines instructional design as the practice of creating those instructional experiences that facilitate and support the efficient acquisition of knowledge and making it more appealing. I see instruction design as the creation of lessons, modules, and related materials. It involves establishing learners’ needs, setting clear goals, and initiating appropriate intervention through learning or teaching activities in addition to assessment tasks that aim at facilitating quality instruction. In short, I could describe the instructional design as the process involved in the designing, developing, and delivering learning products.
The ADDIE model refers to a method of instructional design that designers of learning products use to organize and streamline the production of their course content. The process of ADDIE involves five stages, ADDIE being the acronym for analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The process requires that the stages are done in that order but with special emphasis on iteration and reflection. The process creates feedback that is necessary for continuous improvement.
The first stage of the process, analysis involves clarifying the instructional problem. Afterward, the goals and objectives of the instruction have to be determined. Moreover, focus is given to the knowledge and skills of learners which have to be identified and the learning environment understood. The design stage deals with identifying learning objectives, developing content, and instruments for carrying out the assessment. During the development phase, all the content assets created in the previous stage are created and assembled. Relevant technologies are developed and integrated. Apart from performing debugging procedures, any revisions arising from the feedback are done. The implementation stage involves training both learners and facilitators. Learners have to be trained in how to use new tools such as software. The evaluation stage involves carrying out tests and receiving responses from users. At one point in time, I was involved in an instructional design project that that sought to develop learning content for people aspiring to become foreign exchange traders. Learning was to be provided in form of online course and ADDIE process played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the project. During the analysis stage, we had to gather information about our target clients and their training needs. We had to determine the knowledge they already had about financial markets and their level of experience trading forex. Moreover, we had to specify the desired outcomes by the end of training and the duration the course would last for each individual learner. During the design phase, we carried out an assessment before creating an outline of what we were to offer. Apart from paying attention to tools that we would need to develop learning content, we had to choose the audio as well as visual elements that were to be utilized. Additionally, we had to create opportunities for our online clients to practice trading skills that they had learned. As a result, every module was followed by a one week break during which we would practice to trade with our learners. This was followed by the development stage in which we put the design into action by creating the course content. Since we had used development tools meant for online courses, implementation was easy. All we had to do its advertise our work and look for clients. After teaching the content for some time and testing the skills acquired by our students, we carried out an evaluation by finding out how many of them passed the course successfully. We had to investigate the reasons the majority of our learners failed the course. We detected some gaps and misunderstandings and addressed them accordingly. If you were asked to conduct a study on the effectiveness of a particular instructional technology e.g. tablets, apps, online learning, mobile learning, and VR, how would you design the study? If I were asked to conduct a study on the effectiveness of a particular instructional technology, I would structure my study into sections. The first section would be the introduction. Under this chapter, I would include the statement of the problem, subjects, research questions, research methods, data collection and analysis, results and discussion, and finally the conclusion. In the statement of the problem, I would provide a clear statement that proves that a problem exists. I would also provide evidence to support the claim that the problem exists and define any major concepts or terms used. This would be followed by the literature review, an evaluation of the literature and research on the chosen topic to gather information that is already available. The next section would be the methodology and would contain research design, research questions, and data collection. In the research design, I would explain the methods and procedures that used to collect and analyze the variables that I would have specified in the research problem statement. In the research questions section, I will state what my research is centered around. The research question will focus on the topic of study selected, will determine data collection method to be used, and serve as a guide for the rest of the inquiring, data analysis, and reporting. I will then inert data collection stage where I would gather and measure information pertaining to the variables of interest that I will be studying. This should be done in a systematic manner for easier analysis and to provide answers to the research questions stated earlier. Finally, I would provide the report of the findings in the results sections. They would be based on the methodology applied to gather the information and would be without bias.
Identify what you consider to be the most significant technology development in terms of it’s impact on the field of instructional technology
I consider the development of the Internet and computer technology to be the most significant technology development that has had the greatest impact on the field of instructional technology. This technology has proved to be a powerful tool that has transformed this field in several that include providing easier means for teachers to develop their instructional materials and new ways for them to not only learn but also work together. Today, the Internet and ready availability of computer devices have brought the world into a new age where education is available anywhere any time. The development has forced instructional designers to be extremely creative to benefit from the opportunities provided by this development. The result has been a change in education to provide effective and efficient learning to everyone irrespective of their geographic location. Today, the Internet has made substantial amounts of information readily available. Additionally, there are uncountable openings for formal learning through the Internet. Moreover, the Internet has expanded communication and collaboration, two important factors in the field of instructional technology. Teachers and students alike can no share their learning experiences with other people in different locations with ease. Moreover, teachers can now collaborate when designing and developing learning systems through computers and Internet-based tools such as Google Docs. The Internet is also changing the roles of both students and their teachers. The teacher is no longer the only source of information. Numerous universities and schools have had to redesign their learning spaces as students become more responsible for learning with the help of the Internet and teachers playing the role of a guide.Define instructional technology as a field of study
