Past Present and Future

Roshomon, the movie.

The movie, set in old Japan is simple yet complex in its narration, a mysterious crime involving rape and murder. A court session where the four witnesses tell a compelling but  flawed story.

The narrative of the Bandit claims that the Samurai’s wife challenged them to a duel at which the bandit defeated the Samurai. The Samurai claims that he killed himself out of shame on being defeated by the bandit. The wife also instigates the matter on herself with no clear recollection because she claimed to faint at some point. The wood cutter who is only witness lied in court but later says that the bandit killed the husband.

The human behavior comes into play a lot. The human is subjective in different situations. The human mind is conditioned to lying and thinking exaggerated thoughts often highly elevated depending on situation. Men are self-absorbed and will tell of experiences on how they will most likely benefit. Guilt may make people distort their memories like in this mysterious case. Humans cannot be true about self .The story brings fourth elements in the nature of the human. Ego, from a husband that won’t admit his failure. Moral weakness, of a woman that has been assaulted and shunned by husband. The ‘honour’ of a thief that has nothing to lose and the loss of humanity for a priest that is salvaged by a woodcutter suspected as a thief but takes in an orphan at the end of the movie.
