CHAPTER SUMMARY.

Chapter 13

Kathrine who was employed in west Computing office had only stayed there for two weeks when her manager opted to send her back home. According to Dorothy Vaughan, Katherine was still under her since she was her former boss. She suggested that Katherine be employed permanently in west computing office or taken to the Flight Research Division.

Although Katherine’s manager was not for the idea since he did not advocate for the workforce of women, he accepted and Katherine got increment in salary and a full time employment in Flight Research division. She was employed in Maneuver Loads Branch due to her knowledge in mathematics and was in charge of the safety of the plane and investigation of plane crash.

He was to investigate small piper propeller plane which had crash. He found that the propeller plane flew in the perpendicular to that of the large planes a few minutes after. Katherine’s research was a great discovery which made the engineers to do an experiment which was strenuous. This was the best report which had never happened.

There was creation of good rapport between Catherine and the new workmates where, the interaction was much good. Despite the discrimination of the blacks, she decided to do away with that and went ahead in even sharing the unmarked washroom with the whites. After two years her husband also decided to move from the subdivided place of the blacks to a more spacious place in Mimosa Crescent. To Katherine and her three daughters it was a great privilege. Despite the comfort in their life her husband fell ill and died five days to Christmas.

The death of her husbands affected her life although; she was determined to make the life of her daughters bright without their father.

Chapter 14

As the years went by and the end of the World War 2 came, there was high technological advancement. The propellers were replaced by the rocket engines while there was introduction of electronic calculators which replaced the human computers. The female calculators in the office were now relieved the heavy duty the calculators could work the whole night. This served a bigger advantage in the office. . There was also the invention of the rocket plane which marked the turning point of technology.

There was a great competition between human computers and the white computers. Those who were able to manage the electrical computers had jobs automatically and it prompted Dorothy Vaughan to attend computer programming lessons in Hampton Institute.

There was segregation in schools where the blacks joined inferior schools as compared to the whites. Coincidentally there existed cold war channeled by the communists and the spies. Despite all this the black women who worked in Langley had to prove to them that they were good in mathematics. At this time Mary Jackson had new bosses who showed her how to control wind tunnel which was her field. This was used to design missiles hence was very important to the United States.

The report by Mary impressed her boss Kaz and enrolled her to Langley engineering programs. Mary was with challenges since she was going to enroll in white only school she had to get permission from Hampton high school and make petition on the City of Hampton for “special permission”. Lucky enough he faced the School panelist and her request was granted. Despite the world reforms fought for, there was still high tension due to the competition between the United and Soviet Union who were highly competing on technology and ammunition.

Chapter 15

Racism and segregation still dominated the United States right from schools to the work place. This had become a common act which was even in the newspapers and followed by the young like Christine Mann. There was struggle for acceptance by the blacks which had called for the intervention of the Arkansas National Guard, when the nine black students wanted to integrate the white school in Central High School.

Fear had dominated peoples heart as the newspaper read “Red-made Satellite Flashes across US” this was all over the press. There were inventions to visit the outer space made by the engineers, an effort which was made by president Dwight D. and he recorded a failure. The Sputnik age was now starting to get Russia in as the best of the super powers’. United States had lagged behind technologically and it made them come up with the National Advisory Committee for the Aeronautics at the start of the Second World War.

The blacks on the other hand were relating the American inadequacy with the segregation they got and they were channeling to eliminate Arthurine Lucy who had integrated the Alabama University from Alabama campus. As if this was not enough, the Russians also fought for the right of their children to join good schools in the United States. This was evident in the Chicago defender which channeled for equality.

Christine Mann had an opinion that the news had mixed reaction. This was due to her experience that she had when she was three years old, back in japan. She knew human beings could be extinct due to the missile and nuclear bombs. The bomb shelter activities were practiced up to schools. Space travel and exploration seemed extra ordinary to many including Christine but the activity was now common allover

Chapter 16

The launching of sputnik into space made everybody in America to wonder how Russia could be so clever in technology to outdo all other nations. The Americans wanted to know how they lagged behind in space exploration and missile. Katherine Goble took Sputnik as a great challenge but still waited eagerly for the next contest. Despite the effort of the researchers, it was seen as a waste of taxpayers’ money. In spite of these they did not stop the Langley engineers from discovering the missile shapes and the rocket engines. Americans know had to come up with strategies to join the space and the missile discovery. This was to take time to beat the Russians though they put more pressure on quickest and surest way into the space.

The space program was now a Centre of interest, the assignment was bid by the US Airforce, US Naval Research Observation and Army Ballistic Missile. The bid was granted to National Advisory Committee of Aeronautics (NACA) led by the black female computers. In 1958, the US government expanded the research organization and came up with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Its headquarters was in Hampton Virginia. NASA became a widespread known organization and the women computers were awarded a high profile job in the state.

Katherine Goble did not want the sputnik challenge to go unanswered. She wanted to come up unique and be part of the team to send human in space. After the start of NASA there was withdrawal of Aeronautical Laboratory under Dorothy’s, only nine women remaining in. East Computing pool was dissolved. NACA had created a good platform for black women through hiring them in the laboratory. The black women mathematicians therefore, moved to NASA making West Computing to come to an end.
